Mixed Media Musings

They wouldn't let me in at the Stamp and Scrapbook show over the weekend, but my people went and they brought back just a few things.  I had to check them all out.

________________________________________________
For those of you who are taking Jane's Mixed Media Class tomorrow (and in subsequent weeks), she has given us a list of things to bring.  Some of these items you may not have and, not to worry, she will have some available to use.  You will want to have your own supplies though if you want to continue doing pages on your own.  It's also much more convenient for you in class if you have some of your own materials and don't have to wait to share.

We will be using the following:

  • Your normal class kit (including scissors, tape, etc.)
  • Your palette knife
  • Paint brushes in assorted sizes
  • Baby wipes (You WILL be getting dirty.)
  • White gesso
  • Texture paste
  • If you have any Gelatos, bring them along and you'll learn how to use them in your journal.

If you haven't had your dog fix yet today - - - - -

Make 'N Take

AUCTION -  Don't forget the auction on Sunday, June 14th at 1:30.  We are anticipating quite a large turnout, so although we want to see all of you, our loyal customers, this is not the time to introduce all your friends and neighbors to the store.  In other words, come have a good time without bringing the kids, the refrigerator repairman, and Great Aunt Bertha.

Make 'N Take - Here are the pictures of Saturday's Make 'N Take cards. Hope to see you between 10 and 4.

Some more oldies but goodies -

News from the Nest

What were we looking for again?

We're ready to cut and score.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • Good news, bad news: Susan and Gregg's house has sold (after only 10 days on the market), so everything is moving ahead more quickly than we ever would have imagined. We have a full schedule of classes for June, but the store will be closing in mid-July.

  • If you would like us to order any dies, stamps, or stencils from Memory Box, we will be placing our final order with them. Please call the store and let us know what you want by Friday, June 5, at the latest.

  • If you would like us to cut any book board for you, please call and let us know how many and what size.  We have ordered more book board and will be happy to cut it, but we are running out of time.

  • If there is ANYTHING you need, please call or stop in by Saturday, June 6th, and we'll let you know if it's something we can still get for you.

  • Our merchandise is going fast, so make sure you come in and shop while the selection is still good. All gift certificates and tag sale vouchers will need to be redeemed before the store closes.

  • This Saturday, June 6th, is our last Make 'N Take.  Stop in and make a few cards. Only $2 each.

AUCTION

Apparently I put a little statement on the calendar that you should check the blog for details on our auction, and then I forgot to put it on the blog. Oh well, you just can't get good help these days.

On Sunday, June 14th, we will be holding our quasi-annual auction.  We receive a lot of sample items from many of our vendors throughout the year, many of which are not items we normally sell. We want to pass these things along to you, but we want to have fun doing it.  The auction will begin at 1:30, and when you come in you'll receive a quantity of "Nest Bucks" based on your spending during the past 6 months. (For example, if you have spent $700 during 2015, you will receive $700 in Nest Bucks. Everyone will receive at least $500.) You will use the bucks to bid on the items we have.  This is your chance to buy some new craft supplies without any real money ever changing hands. In the past we had new customers drop in to shop during an auction only to be shocked when they heard a stamp being sold for $150 or a pair of scissors going for $300.

I guarantee there will be something you'll want to bid on, a few snacks to go with it, and lots of fun.  This is it - our going away party to show you, our wonderful customers, how much you mean to us.

Some new photos -   In the Flowerbarrow class on June 23rd, we will be making a die-cut wheelbarrow filled with flowers and then placing it in an explode box.  Below is the finished product.

And a rerun of a few old favorite pictures:

June Schedule

A friendly game of tug-of-war.
As you are all by now aware, we are looking for a buyer for the store so Susan can get on with retiring to Arizona.  No one has approached us so far, but we've still got our fingers crossed.  We have a full complement of classes for June and have finished the calendar, so we wanted to share it as soon as possible.  We have a few new and exciting things going on, so we hope you'll be able to join us frequently.

  • MIXED MEDIA WITH JANE - (June 2, 11, 16, 25, 30) Jane Jones will be leading these mixed media classes as she helps you to build your own Art Journal.  She will be teaching a wide variety of techniques using a number of different mediums, all of which will help you express your creative side.  EVERYONE CAN DO THIS, even if you don't feel you are particularly artistic.  There are 5 classes in this series, and you do not have to attend all five.  You can come to one, two, or as many as you'd like. Each class will cover different techniques.  You will need to purchase the Inky Art Journal (available at the store, $11.50) for use in all five classes. Below are a couple of sample pages from Susan's art journal, similar to some things we will be doing.

  • ELIZABETH CRAFT BARNYARD FRIENDS - (June 9)  We will be making cards with a new series of dies from Elizabeth Craft, including a barn with sliding doors, a chicken, a pig, and a cow.  These are really cute critters and a lot of fun to work with. Below is a card (not necessarily one you'll be making) to show you the barn and animals.

  • GLITTER CARDS - (June 18) - Use microfine glitter with different techniques to make really unique cards.  The photos are not available yet.
  • STENCIL CLASS - (June 20) We have a variety of "open" stencils which we will layer with other stencils and use a piggyback technique to create three beautiful cards.

  • FLOWER BARROW - (June 23) Using a Sizzix wheelbarrow die and chipboard, you will make a cute stand-up wheelbarrow which will be embellished with Petaloo flowers. As soon as we have a sample, we will post photos.
  • USING COPICS - (June 27) - We will be offering the intro or beginner level course at 10:30 am and the advanced level course at 2:00 pm.  We do not recommend taking both courses on the same day, since, in order to progress, you need to practice, practice, practice.
    • Intro- You will receive 5 markers for use in this class.  If you already have some Copic markers, bring them along and if you have any number we're using, you can choose a different color in its place. You will learn about the numbering system, refilling, the proper inks and papers to use, and basic coloring and blending techniques. The $40 fee for this class includes your 5 free markers - a $40 value by themselves.
    • Advanced - Bring your own markers to this class and learn more advanced blending and shading techniques, as well as skin coloring and multi-color blending.  The fee for this course is $15.

IMPORTANT NEWS

Dear Friends both far and near,

It has come to a point where I am ready for the next phase of my life.  It is time to find someone to take over the everyday running of The Nest.  This is a shout out to you to see if that someone might be YOU.  Until we find a new owner or I just run out of gas, the store will continue to be business as usual.  We have a full schedule planned for May and you have responded with enthusiasm.  Many of the classes are full and where we could, we have added extra classes.  June is looking just as busy with Jane teaching a class once a week in mixed media art journaling.  The rest of the month's classes will be posted as soon as I have an idea of what they will be.  As always, we look forward to seeing you in the store in the near future.

Let me know if the next phase of your life might be fulfilled by being your own boss, working with wonderful customers, and making new friends while pursuing your passion for paper crafting.  It certainly has been the most exciting and rewarding adventure I have ever undertaken.

Make 'N Take

Our highly trained staff are waiting to fulfill your every need.

This Saturday is Make 'N Take and I know some of you are anxiously waiting to see pictures. (You know who you are!) We'll be doing three cards and a mini accordion-fold album. Drop by anytime between 10 and 4 and make as many projects as you like.  The cost is $2 per item.

This card can be made with either a yellow or a white daisy on the front.

This little album opens and a long folded strip opens out for photos.

We also have some new pictures for our May classes.

The May 12th box card class has been such a hit that we have already filled two classes, so we've opened up a 2:00 class.  We've also added a third box to the class.  In addition to the Graduation Box and the Beach Box, you'll be making this smaller Farm Girl Box which folds to fit in a standard A-2 envelope.

On May 26th we are making a Book Box (not to be confused with the box cards above).  This keepsake box would make a beautiful gift and could be used to hold jewelry or other treasures.  You'll be covering the box, lining it with stick-on velvet sheets, and making flowers using a Susan's Garden Die Set. Due to time constraints, we will have some parts prepared for you.

New Plain Jane Book!

I promised pictures of the new Plain Jane Artisan Style Book as soon as it was finished, and she just brought it in.  With great anticipation, we've all been going through it, and it definitely lives up to our expectations.

It uses the "Artisan Style" line of papers from Graphic 45 and has a definite Art Nouveau feel. For those of you who requested a waterfall, Jane has included two different kinds of waterfalls in this book.  Here is the front cover:

And the inside cover and first page.

If you're interested in taking this class and haven't already signed up, call now and reserve a space. (860-658-9023)
Classes are Wednesdays 5/6 and 5/20 from 10 to 6, or Saturdays 5/9, 5/16, and 5/30 from either 9 to 1 or 2 to 6. For those taking the class, in addition to your regular supplies (including lots and lots of red-line tape), please bring a chisel point black Magic Marker or a Sharpie (not a fine point) to ink edges of chipboard pieces.

In other news,I neglected to list the price of the "Box Cards" class.  The class fee is $15.

OOPS!!

It took me so long to finish the last post (because my furry friends refused to help) that I forgot to post information about one of the classes.

On Saturday 5/23, we are making a Rose Card and Lined Envelope.  The card is made using a new die and some washi tape from "Little B," a company we haven't worked with before.  The card is really pretty, but the exciting part is learning to make the envelope look as if it's lined with gold foil by using wax paper and a washi tape technique. We will also throw in another project just to keep you on your toes.

We just returned from the Collins Show, an education and buying show near Boston, and we've ordered some new stamps, dies, and papers.  Watch this space for previews of coming attractions.

May Schedule

I tried to enlist some help in making the schedule for May, but apparently it was nap time and nobody wanted any part of it.

So I typed it all by myself, and there are lots of classes to choose from.  Call the store (860-658-9023) to register, and remember that if you pay ahead, you get 10% off of any purchases the day of the class.

  • Wedding Cake Explode Box -Tues. May 5 -  Need a wedding gift card holder that turns into a gorgeous keepsake?  You will make a box which, upon opening, "explodes" to reveal a beautiful wedding cake.  It's fun to make and even more fun to give.

  • Artisan Style Plain Jane Book Class-   Wednesdays 5/6 and 5/20 OR Saturdays 5/9, 5/16, and 5/30. Saturday classes are either 9 to 1 or 2 to 6.  Jane is currently finishing the book so I don't have a photo, but those of you who have seen her other books know how beautiful they are. This book uses the Artisan Style line of paper from Graphic 45 and will include a couple of new features that have not been in her other books. I will post photos as soon as they become available.

  • Glitter Cards - Thursday 5/7 - Make two beach themed cards and one tag using peel-offs and microfine glitter.

  • Box Cards - Tuesday 5/12 - These cards are so much fun to make! They fold flat to mail but open to stand up like a box overflowing with goodies.  We will be making one graduation box and one beach-themed box.

                 Beach box opened

            Beach box folded

  • Intro to Copic Markers - Tuesday 5/19 - Have you always wanted to learn how to color with dimension and shadow and form? Have you tried to use Copic markers on your own but aren't quite sure how to get the right look? Then this class is for you. You will learn about the color families and the numbering system, how to refill the markers and change nibs, and how to use the markers to create that beautiful shaded, streakless image. You will receive five free markers with your class fee.  Bring any markers you own with you, and if you already have any of the colors we're using, you can color with your own and choose a new free color. This class is guaranteed to change the way you look at coloring.

  • Shutter Cards - Thursday 5/21 -  We tried this class once before and it was very popular.  When you open these cards, it's like looking through a camera lens. The lens opens to reveal an image or sentiment.  We will be making a spring card and an owl graduation card.  Learn this technique and use it to design cards using your own smallish stamps. (Pictures will be posted when the cards are finished.)

  • G45 Book Box - Tuesday 5/26 - In this class we will take a 5x7 Graphic 45 Book Box and make it into a lovely keepsake box.  We will decorate the box using the "Time To Flourish" collection, then we will decorate the top of the box with sculpted flowers we'll make from "Susan's Garden" dies. We'll decorate and include some mats in the box. Although we don't have a photo yet, this promises to be a beautiful project and a lot of fun to build.

  • Stencil Class - Thursday 5/28 - You will make three cards using the cattail/sunset stencil. These would be great for either dads or grads.

MANY THANKS
Thanks so much to everyone who helped to make Monday's class with Graphic 45 such a success. Charee and Dustin did a fabulous job and their class was extremely interesting and informational. They brought with them a wonderful display of other projects using their products and I know many of us found that very inspiring. So many of our customers follow G45 very closely, and it was very fulfilling to be able to work with them.
